Here is a quote from the Monk Thomas Murton. I love it!
Anxiety is the mark of spiritual insecurity... It is the fruit of unanswered questions. And there is a far worse anxiety, a far worse insecurity, which comes from being afraid to ask the right questions because they might turn out to have no answer. One of the moral diseases we communicate to one another in society comes from huddling together in the pale light of an insufficient answer to a question we are afraid to ask.
Isn't that great!
I really like this quote. The mental picture of a crowd huddled in a pale light afraid to ask the right or obvious question is classic human nature. Leadership is recognized in the one who dares to speak the unspeakable in the midst of that huddle. Initially, the one who dares to ask may be pushed out. However, there are others who thought the same thing and in time they will come out of the huddle voluntarily to search out the one who broke the silence.
ReplyDeleteThere was a book written years ago called The Dark Horse by John Fisher. He wrote a song that was popular for awhile by the same title. I used to give it to high school graduates. It was an allegory of how we all go to the white horse shows to see the show, horses showing their "whiteness", and marvel at how "good" they are compared to the rest of us. Then a "dark" horse shows up to challenge the show and leads those who would follow on the search for truth. Ken, you are one of those dark horses. Thanks for daring to ask the questions.
